Yes. You read that right. I, Stacey, am writing a review and doing a giveaway. New things for a new year, right?
Homework time at my house can get a little crazy. Honestly, it’s my least favorite time of day. This year, I have a third grader and as part of their homework, they have to spend time every week practicing their math facts. Math, my friends, is NOT my thing. It’s really kind of sad when I have to send my fifth grader to her brother for help. Anyhow, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try out the Mathblaster site to assist with my deficiency in math.
This is a super cool game. Seriously. I wish they had something like this when I was a kid. Mathblaster is highly interactive and provides a mix of gaming and learning your math facts for children. It also helps with speed of math facts because you are trying desperately to kill the bad guys by answering as quickly as possible. There are many different games to play, from racing through the galaxy, to shooting down asteroids with the answers on them. Mathblaster has made math practice something to look forward to for sure.
My older kids were all jealous after they watched Mr. M play and everyone took turns. I love that it is fun enough to engage the kids as well as a great learning tool. It also provides many levels for play. It is simple enough for my first grader and hard enough for my fifth grader.
Another amazing part is that you can add up to 6 kids per account, which allows each of my kids to have their own game. For a mom of many, that is an absolute bonus!
They also provide information for parents and teachers as well as a blog that helps with game play, tips, and all kinds of information regarding technology and your kids. It is truly an impressive site.
For better or worse, if I am not paying attention, there is the possibility that the kids could play the game without actually practicing math. There are a ton of fun activities on this site. You can change your character’s look and adopt a pet, to name a couple. And you absolutely need sound to play. We don’t have speakers on our computer and the first time we tried the game, it was too confusing. But after tracking down some headphones, the problem was solved!
Mathblaster has a sister site called JumpStart that provides games for other subjects like language arts and science as well as math. I had to kick my first grader off the site so I could finish writing the review. Both sites are great learning tools that really have the kids anxious to come back for more.
Now, onto the giveaway! Mathblaster will provide a three month membership to their site to the winner. To enter, just leave me a comment. If you want extra entries, you can like me on Facebook, or follow me on Twitter. But then come back and leave a comment for each extra entry. If you already follow me on either Facebook or Twitter, just leave a comment for each to get the extra entry. The giveaway will end next Wednesday, Feb 8th at midnight.
